Harambee Festival
Join us and others in the community to celebrate the 15th annual Harambee Festival on Saturday at Weisser Park (3000 S. Hanna). This all day event will feature family entertainment, a basketball tournament, children’s storytelling, and a stage filled with events from music to poetry and dramatic skits. The theme this year is “Music: A way of life.”
Library staff will be at the festival from 3-5 pm with a craft (Fon Story Pictures, inspired by the Story Pictures of Benin) and to register folks for library cards. Be sure to bring your ID if you would like to register for a card.
What does a librarian do on vacation?
Why, visit other libraries, of course! While on my vacation last week, I had the good fortune to visit the Rochester Hills Public Library in Michigan. Rochester Hills is a little town near Troy, a suburb of Detroit. The librarians there were very nice and let me take photographs of their library. Here are a few shots of things that I saw and liked or thought interesting:
From left to right (click on the image for a larger view of the picture):
1. Lisa relaxes in cool seating in the teen area.
2. You can “check out” tickets for free admission to multiple Detroit museums. This one is for 4 free admissions to the Detroit Historical Museum. How cool is that?
3. The library has different return boxes for different types of material.
4. Lisa in the children’s department, which had pillars decorated like giant crayons and labeled with the subject headings that could be found in that area.
5. Their self checkout machines can be used in 4 different languages – English, Spanish, Russian, and Tamil.
Pontiac Branch, on the web!
We are hoping to use this site as a means of communicating with our library patrons, and we’re bringing it right to you. This site will now be the landing page when you open the Internet on Pontiac branch computers, and here you can find information on programs going on in our branch, book reviews, community information, and other tidbits to keep you in the know.
We got this idea from the Grabill Branch, another branch in the Allen County Public Library system. That branch has had much success with their site, and you can take a look at it here .
We promise to have more content up soon, but until then, we’ll leave you with a little video holiday card we made for the rest of the library staff:
